Placenta Encapsulation Frequently Asked Questions
Q Can I encapsulate my placenta if I'm planning a medicated or surgical birth?
A Yes of course! Once your placenta hasn't been sent to pathology, you should be able to have your placenta encapsulated.
Q If I'm Group B Strep positive or experience an infection during birth, can I still have my placenta encapsulated?
A Group B Strep or other infections during the labour will require that the placenta is steamed through the TCM method of placenta preparation. During the Traditional Chinese Method, the placenta is steamed to ensure the bacteria is destroyed before we dehydrate the placenta.
Q I want to donate breast milk to the human milk bank to help premature and sick babies, can I still have my placenta encapsulated?
A Yes! You can still go ahead with your placenta encapsulation. We recommend you connect with the human milk bank before beginning to consume your capsules. If your placenta is encapsulated in your own home, it may be possible to begin taking your placenta capsules immediately. If you're having your placenta processed anywhere other than your home, it is advised you do not begin to consume your placenta capsules until after you have completed your milk donation. We always recommend you connect with the human milk bank prior to consuming your placenta capsules.
Q When might I not be able to use my placenta for placenta encapsulation?
A If your placenta has been stored or transported incorrectly, we would not be able to process it for placenta capsules. If for any reason, your placenta has been sent to pathology we would not be able to encapsulate it.
Q Can I do delayed cord clamping if I want to do placenta encapsulation?
A Yes! Delayed cord clamping is becoming common practise in many Irish Maternity Hospitals as it has proven benefits for your baby. We know that at the time of birth, the placenta still holds up to a third of your baby's blood. We always recommend delayed cord clamping, this does not affect your placenta in any adverse way.
Q What if I need emergency treatment or a prolonged hospital stay?
A Most of our clients choose to have their placenta encapsulated in their own homes. Your placenta will be perfectly safe in a fridge for up to 5 days or in a freezer for up to 6 months! If your placenta has been frozen, we recommend it's thawed in a fridge for at least 24 hours prior to the placenta encapsulation process.
Q How do I know it's my placenta capsules I'm consuming?
A Dublin Family Doulas prefer to encapsulate your placenta in your home. This means that your placenta never leaves your care. You birth your placenta, you transport your placenta, you store your placenta at home and you are welcome to observe (or ignore!) the entire process!
Q How Safe is the process of placenta encapsulation?
A Dublin Family Doulas adhere to the IPEN (International Placenta Encapsulation Network) guidelines for placenta encapsulation. IPEN’s Code of Practice which has been reviewed and approved by the Health Protection Unit and the Environmental Health Office in the U.K. Dublin Family Doulas use hospital grade sanitisation and sterilisation solutions and disposable equipment where possible. While this process falls short on being environmentally friendly, it's the safest process available in Ireland.
Placenta Encapsulation is available from Dublin Family Doulas to families birthing at all three Dublin Maternity Hospitals, The Coombe, The Rotunda and Holles Street and Our Lady Of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda.
